What to text after a first date
Updated
Send a short text the same day or the next morning that mentions one specific thing from the date and makes an easy suggestion or question. Keep it warm and light: it should say you enjoyed the time without asking them to decide anything big yet.

- 01
Reference one real moment
Something you talked about, a joke, a place you went. It shows you were listening, and it gives the reply an obvious starting point.
- 02
Keep it short
Two or three sentences is enough. A long message the morning after reads as more than the situation calls for.
- 03
Suggest something small
A next step that is easy to say yes to, such as a coffee or a walk, works better than an open "we should do this again sometime".
- 04
Do not wait for a perfect moment
There is no ideal delay. The same day or the next morning is normal. A week of silence after a good date can make the next message harder to write.
Three follow-ups, and why they work
“"Thanks for tonight, the story about your grandmother's kitchen made my week. Coffee on Thursday?"”
Why it works: It names one real moment and suggests one small next step with a day attached. There is only one decision to make.
“"I had a good time. Still thinking about that terrible film you made me watch. Want to pick the next one?"”
Why it works: A light joke that refers back to the date, plus an invitation that gives them the choice of what to do.
“"Really enjoyed meeting you. Hope the rest of your week goes well."”
Why it works: It is warm and does not push for anything. Use it when you are not sure you want a second date, so the reply stays easy either way.
“"Good to meet you. Loved hearing about the job change. Let me know if you want to try that ramen place."”
Why it works: It recalls something they said and offers one place they can accept or decline without explaining.
“"Got home safely. Thanks for the walk, it was the best part of my week."”
Why it works: A simple thank-you tied to a real moment. It is easy to answer and it does not ask for a decision.

Asking how they felt about the date
It turns a pleasant evening into a test they now have to pass in writing. Say how you felt instead, and let them say theirs.
Waiting until the next morning turns into the next week
A long gap makes the message feel like an apology, and it gives them a reason to read the silence as lost interest.
Sending several messages with no reply
One follow-up is a message. Two or three in a row, before they answer, reads as pressure. If they do not reply, leave it there.
