What to say as a first message on a dating app
Updated
Write one specific message about something in their profile, and end it with a question that is easy and enjoyable to answer. Skip "hey" and generic compliments: a message that shows you read their profile gives them something to reply to, and that is what gets a reply.

- 01
Point at one real detail
A photo, a prompt, a job, a place. One detail is enough. It proves the message was written for them, and it hands them the topic so they do not have to invent one.
- 02
Ask something easy to answer
The best question can be answered in one line and has a fun answer. "What was the best part of that trip?" is easy. "What are your goals in life?" is a job interview.
- 03
Keep it short
Two or three sentences. A long first message reads as pressure, and it makes the reply feel like homework.
- 04
Sound like yourself
Copying a line you found online works until they reply. Write something you would be comfortable saying out loud, because the conversation after it will be in your own voice.
Six first messages, and why they work
“That photo from the coastal path: is that Cornwall? I have been meaning to walk it. Did you go in spring or summer?”
Why it works: It names a detail, shows interest, and the question is easy and personal.
“Your prompt says the best pasta is the one you make badly at midnight. I need to know what the midnight pasta is.”
Why it works: It quotes them back, which proves you read it, and it invites a funny, specific answer.
“A bouldering instructor: so you fall for a living. What is the worst fall you have taken?”
Why it works: Light teasing about their job, plus a question that invites a story.
“I am torn between your two dog photos. Is the one in the raincoat the real personality?”
Why it works: Playful, low pressure, and a one-line answer is enough.
“We both said we are bad at small talk, so I will skip it: what is something you could talk about for an hour?”
Why it works: It acknowledges something you share and moves straight to a question worth answering.
“You travel a lot for work. What is the one place you would go back to without any reason?”
Why it works: It turns a fact on their profile into an open question about what they love.

Practise a first message with an AI partnerWhat gets no reply
"Hey" or "Hi, how are you?"
It gives them nothing to respond to except more small talk, and everyone else sent the same thing.
Comments only about looks
They have heard it many times and it does not start a conversation. If you mention how someone looks, attach it to a question about the thing in the photo.
A question that needs an essay
If answering takes five minutes of thought, the easiest move is to not answer.
Sending three messages before they reply
One good message is a message. A second and third read as pressure, not interest.
